Scriptures Used for the Lyrics

Starting from the top of the song, every line, for every stanza, is based on a scripture, or two, from the KJV Bible. I mostly used scriptures from my posts on KJV Bible Verses About Love and End Times Prophecies, with an emphasis on the coming return of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
I knit each stanza together from these scriptures:

Who is the Shulamite Bride of Christ?

Shulamite Bride of Christ

This depiction represents the prophetic dualism of the Shulamite described in the Song of Solomon, and the Bride of Christ in the New Testament.
She has been depicted according to the description given for the Shulamite Israelite from Song of Solomon, but she represents the Bride of Christ.
The Shulamite Bride of Christ is a foreshadowing prophecy, pointing to the coming eternal bliss between God and his people, the Church of Jesus Christ.
There are a number of references, all throughout the scriptures, to the bride and the bridegroom, which all have prophetic implications, but I chose to model the bride’s depiction, primarily from the Song of Solomon.
In this rendering, the vine (God’s people, the bride) is ripe, ready and waiting and desirous to be poured forth into the cup of the Returning Bridegroom, just before the light of dawn, at the Mountain of Olives, in Jerusalem.

If you take-a-look at my Song of Solomon KJV Cards post, you will also see this rendering variation, for the Shulamite Bride of Solomon.
Different renderings have been created, for various emphasis.
These are composite character archetypes.
The scriptures seem to imply that the Shulamite Bride was a real woman, esteemed to be the most precious love of King Solomon, who the text may suggest had a vineyard to tend, and would pine for her love to come and visit her, to enjoy the fruits, thereof. This is very much a parallel for the fruitfulness and pining of God’s People, the Bride of the Lamb of God.
There is a kind of dualism, in the bride that ascends, the Church longing for transfiguration and redemption, versus the bride that descends, which is New Jerusalem, the bride transfigured, perfected, and sanctified for eternity.
This song and depiction are focused on the prophetic ascending bride.

What is a Shulamite?

The term “Shulamite” is found in Song of Solomon, and is one of the descriptions for the pining bride, of Solomon’s life and time.
Here are key verses, describing the appearance of the Beloved Shulamite:

Song of Solomon 1:5-6 KJV
I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
- Note:
  These statements have created a popular cult narrative that she was some manner of western or sub-Saharan African, but looking at the potential connotations of the terms, I believe it is basically saying that she was sun-kissed or dusky, like the Arabian women of Kedar.
  I researched this for some time, re-visited it, and re-rendered a number of times, but it’s especially tricky, because there are not a lot of images, online, which adequately depict this type of woman.
  The closest I could find were searches on dusky Indian or Arabic women, which are very similar to dark-skinned Gypsies.
  They oftentimes have high contrast features, like dark purple lips.
  I did what I could to depict her as a beautiful dusky Semitic Ancient Israelite woman, but this type of generation requires a special custom loaded model, which I did not undertake, initially.
  I did, however, put a great deal of effort into rendering her features, and the principle scenes, to match the scriptures, so it’s on the right track, but it could be improved, in the future.

Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
- Note:
  There are a variety of theories, as to what a Shulamite is supposed to be, which are as-follows:
  - Belief that "Shulamite" is another form of "Shunammite," a person from the village of Shunem.
  - Theory that "Shulamite" relates to "Salem," an ancient name for Jerusalem.
    We know she had family in the general region of Jerusalem, and kept vineyards, so we can make certain assumptions about her nationality, which are more reasonable than other speculations.
  - Interpretation that "Shulamite" is not a place but the feminine version of the name Solomon.
  - She came from an unknown location named Shulem.
  - She was from the ancient city of Abel-meholah.
  - Abstract title for “peaceful one” or “perfect one”, since the term stems from “shalam”, which has a large variety of similar meanings.
    I tend to lean more towards this theory, since the Bride of Christ will be perfected in the transfiguration, at the Mount of Olives.
    This also may blend well with the Salem theory, as a kind of dualistic meaning, especially since the descending Bride is known to be New Jerusalem, it fits very well, but this is speculation.

How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince’s daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.
Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.

Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.

How It Was Made

In early 2024, I was looking through Harpsichord songs, out of curiosity for baroque and renaissance period compositions, when I stumbled onto a curious piece, which caught my attention:

The Frog Galliard

This instrument is technically called a Virginal, which has a rich and robust sound quality, compared to typical “tinny” Harpsichord claviers. It reminded me of a rich Square-Saw Synth lead patch hybrid, which surprised me.
That sound quality, coupled with the passionate romance of its composition, led me to looking through several dozen recordings of John Dowland’s repertoire. This particular performance, above, is the instrumental version for one of his more famous pieces, below:

Now, O’Now, I Needs Must Part

While the vocal version is lovely, I find the instrumental performances show-off the running passions, a bit better, for this song. You might also notice that he incorporated parts of the famous Greensleeves ballad into the song, which is interesting. There are aspects of John’s compositions, which have enormous potential, but are often not fully developed. So, in realizing that potential, I perused more of his discography, to find this gem:

Come Again, Sweet Love Doth Now Invite

This song is not as popular, as some of John’s other pieces, but it is definitely one of his best compositions. Credit, where credit is due, to a very lovely performance by Olivier Bensa and Cécile Cardinot. Hearing this, a few times, I perceived this song could be adapted as a pining prayer of praise, to Christ.

About one year, from that discovery, having it in the back of my mind, I decided to craft new lyrics, based on the return of Christ, using KJV verses. This was a difficult task, which required macro narrative consistency, improved rhyming schemes, modified stanza arrangements, and ensuring the words could properly latch to the melody, in the general song structure. Over several months, I handled more than 1500+ track variations, in the development process, for my adapted versions of this romantic composition.

About John Dowland

John Dowland (c. 1563–1626), a prominent English Renaissance composer and lutenist, thought to have been born in London, had special renown for his melancholic lute songs, like "Flow My Tears", and instrumental works such as “Lachrimae”, or “Seaven Teares”, among other pieces.
After studying in France and Italy, and converting to Catholicism, he served in courts across Europe, including Denmark (1598–1606), and England, under King James I (1612), but it is speculated that his Catholic conversion may have hindered his career, in Protestant courts. His influential publications, like First Book of Songs (1597), sparked a lute song craze, and despite dying in poverty in London, his music saw a 20th-century revival, supposedly impacting modern composers, like Benjamin Britten.

Final Note from Ivan

For my part, even though his composition was written for a secular romance, I don’t presume that is the fruit God desired for the talents John cultivated. While he may have been Catholic, I hope he believed in the Word of God, rather than the ordinances of Men, and if so, perhaps my adaptation will lay up a little treasure or mercy, for John, at the Judgment.
I would that everyone could see, and know, and understand, the depths of the riches of Christ, that their talents are not for vanities, but for the Glory of God’s Righteous Branch.
The Greatest Romance, of all, is in Jesus Christ, with his Bride (his people).
